Namibia has been severely affected by Covid 19 and is now classified as a high-risk area by the German government. The number of cases increased rapidly in July, resulting in Namibia asking for international help. The reason for this strong increase of Covid19 is probably an extremely strong spread of the DELTA variant.
German-Namibian organizations frequently asked the German government for support for Namibia in an open letter and in personal requests _ as did Suni e.V. On 8 July 2021, the Antonov An-225 landed in Windhoek with medical supplies from the German Armed Forces, which were given to Namibia as part of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism. This was followed by two more aid flights from Germany and one each from Finland and Belgium.
At the end of June, Suni e.V. appealed for donations to provide rapid financial support in the Omaheke region due to the sharp rise in the number of Covid19 infections in Namibia. Within a short time, 3,500 € were collected! We are very happy and would like to thank all our supporters.
The donation was used to purchase five APAP ventilators and two suction pumps as well as materials for the hospital in Gobabis. The governor of the Omaheke Region Pijoo Nganate thanked Suni e.V. and its supporters personally with a letter. The purchase of the medical material was coordinated via the Namibian embassy in Berlin with the head physician of the state hospital in Gobabis.
